10-Day Galapagos Islands & Amazon Adventure Tour


DAY 1 – QUITO

12/28/2015 – Arrival to Quito; check in to accommodation. Get a good night’s rest before starting your program the next day!

DAY 2 – QUITO – BALTRA – ISABELLA

12/29/2015 – We fly from Quito to the Island of Baltra. At the airport in Baltra, we will meet up with our Local Guide who will take us to the port of Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island) for lunch.

Afterwards, we will take the speedboat to Isla Isabela to check in to our hotel. After a brief rest, we will head to the FLAMINGO LAGOON, which is the largest coastal lagoon found in the Galapagos and is one of the main reproductive sites for the grand majority of flamingos.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner.

 DAY 3 – SIERRA NEGRA ACTIVE VOLCANO TREKKING –  CONCHA PERLA ISABELA

12/30/2015 – Early in the morning after breakfast, we’ll take an excursion to the Sierra Negra Volcano.  This volcano has the second largest volcanic crater in the world, measuring 6 miles in diameter and 300 feet deep.

To arrive at this incredible sight we travel by bus to the Galapagos National Park where we will register our visit and then begin our hike to the Sierra Negra Volcano.

We’ll then proceed to the Volcan Chico where you can feel the warmth of the ground as proof of the volcano’s activity.

Here we’ll stop for a box lunch before returning to the hotel.  After a brief rest, we’ll have the chance to go snorkeling and swimming at Concha Perla where we can observe the colorful fish, sea urchins, starfish, sea lions, and even sea turtles.

DAY 4 – TORTOISES BREEDING CENTER – TINTORERAS

12/31/2015 – After breakfast we will go to the GIANT TORTOISE BREEDING CENTER, where we will visit “THE WALL OF TEARS.” From 1946 to 1959, Isabela was designated a penal colony by the Ecuadorian government and prisoners were obligated to build a wall with enormous blocks of lava.

Due to the arduous labour and harsh conditions in which the prisoners lived, this site is known as “EL MURO DE LAS LAGRIMAS.” Additionally, we will visit a small lava tunnel and another FLAMINGO LAGOON, and then we will return to the hotel to have lunch.

In the afternoon, we will sail to “ISLOTE TINTORERAS.” It is called this due to a large crevice with very clear calm water in which white-tip sharks known as “TINTORERAS” come daily to rest on the bottom.

We can also observe penguins, sea lions, and marine iguanas and go snorkeling with sharks as well as other colorful tropical fish while enjoying the beaches of Isabela.

DAY 5 – PTO AYORA – CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION

01/01/2016 – After breakfast, we will take a speedboat to PUERTO AYORA, where our Local Guide will be waiting for us in order to check in to the hotel. Immediately, we will enjoy a wonderful visit to see GIANT TORTOISE IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT.

After lunch in the Highlands, we will return to Puerto Ayora and go to the CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION. Here we will have the opportunity to remember the history of the famous Lonesome George.

Optional: You may visit the town at night for dancing and entertainment.

DAY 6 – THE TWINS – BALTRA

01/02/2016  – After breakfast, we will travel to Baltra Airport. On the way there we will stop by “The Twins” (“The Gemelos”), which are similar to craters, but formed by a collapse of the Earth because of the way lava flow passed below it.

We will depart to Quito and check into our accommodation.

DAY 7 – QUITO COLONIAL

01/03/2016  – Today we will have the opportunity to enjoy the famous old town with a walking tour of Colonial Quito, our Local Guide will tell us some of the many stories that this place has witnessed, being named one of the first UNESCO World Heritage sites in the word.

Named for the Quitus, who lived in the area before the Spanish conquest, and the capital of Ecuador, it was built in the 16th century on the ruins of an Incan city. While walking through its magical streets you will feel like you’ve gone back 500 years in the past.

You will have plenty of free time in the afternoon for shopping.

DAY 8 – CUYABENO AMAZON EXPEDITION

01/04/2016  – Early in the morning we will take a short flight to Lago Agrio (45mn), where our Amazon adventure will begin. We will travel to Tierras Orientales, where we’ll start our canoe journey down the Aguarico river and continue along the Cuyabeno black water river to our Lodge. After dinner our naturalist guide will give us a captivating lecture on the Amazon.

DAY 9 – CUYABENO AMAZON EXPEDITION

01/05/2016 – Early morning we will have a canoe excursion to catch some of the rainforest’s thriving wildlife activity.

After breakfast, we trek in a primary rainforest with our naturalist and native guides who will explain the practical and medicinal uses of the plants. After lunch we will go out with canoes to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and to try to find a rare species of monkeys and dolphins. After dinner we venture into the forest and with a bit of luck find some more wildlife.

DAY 10 – CUYABENO AMAZON EXPEDITION

01/06/2016 – Starting early in the morning we spend the whole day exploring the Amazon. We navigate downstream to observe the enchanting salt lick (exposed clay bank) where colorful Parrots and Parakeets feed on the clay to draw the toxins from their bodies. Return to the Lodge.

After breakfast we trek into pristine primary rainforest. Our native guide shares his wealth of knowledge, showing us the medicinal and practical uses of the rainforests flora and fauna taught by their ancestors for generations. We will also learn how all life in the tropical rainforest co-exists in a fragile balance.

After lunch, we navigate along the Cuyabeno River where we have a good chance of seeing the freshwater pink and grey river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis and Sotalia fluviatilis) in the spectacular scenery. We also try our luck at Piranha fishing.

We will pay a visit to the Kichwa Birdwatching Tower; here above the canopy we see a breathtaking view of the surrounding rainforest and can observe a variety of species; including Toucans, Parrots, Monkeys, and many more other creatures.

After dinner, we venture out on a night excursion to search for Caimans (alligator family) and nocturnal birds.

DAY 11 – CUYABENO AMAZON EXPEDITION

01/07/2016  – After breakfast, we navigate along Cuyabeno rivers towards the Kichwa Community where our naturalist guide explains the culture and traditions of the native people from the past to the present.

From here we head back to our jungle bungalows for some free time to hang out with new friends and relax before the journey home tomorrow.

DAY 12 – CUYABENO AMAZON RIVER & LAGO AGRIO AIRPORT

01/08/2016 – After breakfast, we travel by canoe down the Cuyabeno River and back along the Aguarico River to Pto. Gregorio, from here we catch our bus to the Lago Agrio airport. Fly back home!
